Elementary
School has 688 students across grades K-5. Hickman is a 7
acre-school, located in Mira Mesa, a region of San Diego in Southern
California. Mira Mesa has a population of 57,280 people,
while
San Diego has a population of 1,200,000 people. Mira Mesa is very
diverse. Some of the cultures are Vietnamese, Hispanic,
Japanese,
Philippine, Korean and American.
To show our school spirit, on Fridays we wear our Hickman T-shirts.
ヒックマン小学校（幼稚園―小学5年）には、688人の生徒が、います。 ヒックマン小学校は、面積７エーカー(約0.28ｋm2)
で、カリフォルニア州南部、サンデイエゴ市ミラメサ地区にあります。 ミラメサ地区の人口は、
57,280人で、サンデイエゴ市の人口は、1,200,000人です。 ミラメサ地区の文化
は、とても多様です。 ベトナム、ヒスパニック系、日本、フイリッピン、韓国、アメリカの文化な
どがあります。
毎週金曜日に、ヒックマン小学校の学風を示すために、ヒックマン小学校のT-シャツを着る生徒がたくさんいます。
Our
class has 17
boys and 17 girls. Some of the games we love to play at
recess
are Kickball and Tetherball. Kickball
is a game similar to baseball but instead of hitting the ball with a
bat, you kick the ball. Tetherball is a game where you hit a
ball
attached to a pole. The goal is to wrap the ball around the
pole.
In B7 we
do weekly projects called A to Z journals where we research different
countries, famous people and topics. We independently read
just
about every day for 30-40 minutes. We enjoy keeping our
school
work organized and clean. Everyone in our class is learning
to
play an instrument this year (recorders, violins, clarinets, flutes,
trumpets).
We have a safety
patrol to keep us safe after school and next we get the opportunity to
take part in that. Some things we can't do at school are bring
skateboards, play soccer and wear "heeles" (shoes with wheels).

分、個人で、読書をしています。 学校での勉強をきちんとして、教室を整理しています。今年は、クラス全員、楽器（たて笛、バイオリン、クラリネット、
フルート、トランペット）を習っています。
放課後、安全パトロール隊が、交通整理をしています。 今度、私たちも、安全パトロール隊に参加します。 学校で禁止されていることは、スケートボードを
持ってくること、サッカーをすること、「ヒーラー」（車輪つきのくつ）をはくことです。
１．How many hours are you in school? Starting time? End time? How many months of the year are you in school?
学校に、何時 間、いますか？ 何時に始まりますか？ 何時に終わりますか？ 一年に何ヶ月、学校に行きますか？
学校には８時 間。 始まるのは８時１５分。 終わるのは３時４５分です。 １年に１０ヶ月学校に通います。
We stay at school for eight hours. School starts at 8:15 and ends at 3:45. We go to school for ten months a year.
２．Why are there only 275 students at your school? Is your town small?
どうして、学 校に、275人しか、生徒がいないのですか。 住んでいる町は、小さいのですか。
丸亀市は１１ 万。 小学校が１７あります。 昔からの町なのでだんだん子どもの人数が減ってきています。
Marugame City has 110,0000 persons. We have 17 elementary schools in Marugame. Our school is located in the downtown of Marugame (many people has been moving out from the downtown to the suburb of Marugame), and therefore, the number of children has been decreasing.
３．Do you have a weekend break?
週末（土曜日 と日曜日）、学校は、休みですか？

School is off on Saturday and Sunday.
４．What languages do you speak in school?
学校で、何語 を話しますか？
ほとんど日本 語。ペルー人がいるので２名スペイン語も。
Most of us speak Japanese. There is two students from Peru at our school. So they speak Spanish.
５．What do you do in school? Average day? Schedule?
学校で、何を しますか？ 平日は？ 時間割は？
国語，算数， 理科，社会，体育，図工，音楽，家庭科，総合的な時間です。 クラブ活動や委員会活動もあります。
We have Japanese Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Physical Education, Art and Crafts, Music, Home Economics and Comprehensive Learning Hours. We also have Special Activities and committee work.
６．Do you have any special programs at school?
学校に、何 か、特別な学習計画が、ありますか？
総合的な学習 で，ボランティア活動（河の清掃，幼稚園の訪問）やユニセフ募金活動などもしました。
During Comprehensive Learning Hours, we did volunteer activities (such as cleaning the river banks, and visiting preschool), fund raising activities for UNICEF, and so on.
７．What kind of books do you read?
どんな本を読 んでいますか？
推理小説ファ ンが多い。
Many of us love detective stories.
８．Do you play an instrument at school?
学校で、楽器 を習っていますか？

We learn to play a recorder.
９．What do you do in P.E.?
体育の時間 は、何をしますか？
たとえば「バ スケット」「サッカー」「バレー」「なわとび」など。 「キックボール」もします。
We play basketball, soccer, volleyball, jump rope, kickball and so on.
１０．Why is basketball your favorite sport?
どうして、バ スケットボールが、一番好きですか？
先生がバスケ がすき。
Because our teacher likes basketball.

Yes. We sometimes play kickball.
１２． What numbers does "Battle Pencil" has? Make or buy?
「バトルえん ぴつ」に、どのような数字が、ついているのですか？ 「バトルえんぴつ」は、自分たちで作るのですか？ それとも、買うのですか？
買います。 ５０、－３０等の数字が、ついています。 ２人で、同じ本数(例えば、５本ずつ）の鉛筆をころがして面にある数字で戦います。
We buy a "Battle Pencil." The hexagonal Battle Pencil has six numbers, such as 50 and -30, on its each side. Two persons roll several Battle Pencils of their own and compete to reach the higher number.
１３． What other games do you like to play? At recess/break?
他に、どのよ うなゲームをして遊んでいますか？ 休み時間には？
将棋やウノ， トランプなど。 昼休みにサッカー，フリスビーなど。
We play shogi (chess), "Uno"-cards, and cards. During the lunch break, we play soccer, Frisbees, and so on.
１４．Why do you have to walk home in a group? What happened? Can't your parents drive you?
どうして、集 団下校をしているのですか？ 何が起こったのですか？ お母さんたちが、車で、送ってくれないのですか？
丸亀市でも痴漢などがときどき出現し，被害にあう児童もいる。 不審者対策のためにやっている。 送り迎えは仕事をしている人が多いので無理。
There are some cases of sexual molesters even in Marugame, and some children become a victim. Therefore, we walk home in a group for security reason. Parents cannot drive us home because many parents work.
１５． What do you do at home? Do you have homework? What kind? How much?
家で、何をし ていますか？ 宿題は、ありますか？ どのような宿題ですか？ どのぐらいありますか？
家では，ゲー ムをしたり、本を読んだり、テレビを見たり、自分一人でゆっくり時間を過ごすことが多いです。 友達と遊ぶのは、土日が多いです。 宿題はあります。 漢 字と計算で、約２０分程度です。
We play games, read books, watch TV and relax ourselves by alone at home. We play with friends on weekend. Yes. We have homework. We usually have to write Chinese characters many times and to solve the problems of mathematics. It takes about 20 minutes.

お父さん、お 母さんは、どんな仕事をしていますか？
アメリカと同 じです。 いろいろです。
They are engaged in various jobs, like parents in the United States.
１７． What kind of clothes do you wear? home? school?
どのような服 を着ていますか？ 家では？ 学校では？
学校は制服で す。 家は自由。
We wear a school uniform at school. We are free to wear any clothes at home.
１８． What do you eat? Favorite foods?
何を食べてい ますか？ 大好きな食べ物は、何ですか？
朝はパンと スープ、昼はうどんやラーメン、夜はご飯とみそしると肉が多いです。 人気があるのは、ラーメンなどの麺類。 魚よりも肉が好きな子が、多いです。 ス ナックおかしは、あまり食べない。
Many of us eat bread and soup for breakfast, noodles, such as Chinese noodles for lunch, and rice, miso-soup, and beef for dinner. Noodles, such as Chinese noodles are our favorite. Many of us like beef better than fish. We do not eat snacks much.
１９． What restaurants are by you?
近くに、どの ようなレストランや食べ物屋が、ありますか？
御寿司屋や中 華料理店が、あります。
There are sushi-restaurants and Chinese restaurants by us.
２０． How's the climate?
そちらは、ど のような気候ですか？
冬は５～１０ 度。 夏は３０度ぐらい。 夏水不足になったりします。
It is 5 to 10 decrees centigrade (41 Fahrenheit to 50 Fahrenheit) in the winter, and about 30 decrees centigrade (86 Fahrenheit) in the summer. We sometimes have water shortage during the summer.
２１． What holidays do you celebrate?
どのような祭 日を祝いますか？
例えば、正月 は、ほどんどの人が、神社に お参りに行きます。 帰りに食べに行ったりして、楽しみます。 クリスマスに、サンタ（両親）からプレゼントをもらい、ケーキを食べて楽しみます。 例え ばミサに行くなど、宗教的な行動は、ほとんどしないです。 バレンタインでは、女の子が男の子にチョコをあげます。
For
example, most
of us go to shrines on New Year's Day.
We enjoy going out to eat on our way back home. On
Christmas, we receive a present from Santa Claus (parents) and enjoy
eating cakes. But most of us do notcelebrate Christmas for
religious reasons, and few go to church on Christmas Eve. On
Valentine's Day, girls give chocolates to boys.
２２． What animals live in your area?

We do not have animals in our area. Only sparrows are here.
